Dec. 19, Modesto - David H. Hosley, president and general manager of KVIE Public Television in Sacramento, has been named president of the University of California, Merced's Modesto-based Great Valley Center. He will begin his new position effective Feb. 1, 2008.

Dec 1 UC study: Teen drivers distracted by passengers “fooling around”
Dec. 1, Fresno - More than a third of teenage drivers surveyed by University of California researchers admitted that they have been distracted by young passengers while driving. The most common distraction was talking, yelling, arguing or being loud, but 22 percent of the teenage drivers said they were distracted by passengers doing things like “fooling around,” “messing around,” or “being stupid.”

Oct. 3, Ventura - Raised in a Kern County family that traveled frequently for agricultural work, Martha (Martie) Lopez witnessed firsthand the hardships faced by migrant farm laborers. The Delano native collected experiences that would nurture her career-long passion for helping immigrant families facing this difficult life. She developed a research and education program over 36 years with University of California Cooperative Extension that led to national recognition for efforts focused on improving Latino nutrition. Lopez will retire on Nov. 1.

Sept. 10, Merced - A new program, funded by the National Science Foundation's Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program, sponsored in collaboration with the United States Geological Survey and Yosemite National Park will allow eight UC Merced top undergraduate students to conduct research, explore and document the wonders and challenges of the Sierra Nevada. Students may apply by March 15 and are eligible in their freshman, sophomore, junior or senior year of college.

The School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts at UC Merced presents an exhibition of  “Living Under The Trees”, a photo documentary by artist and photojournalist David Bacon. In “Living Under The Trees”, Bacon has documented the lives of Mexican indigenous farm workers in California. The exhibit will be on display at the UC Merced campus from Sept. 4 through Oct. 22 on the second floor of the Kolligian Library. There will be an opening reception with David Bacon, a community panel and a cultural performance by Grupo Folklórico Cultura Se'e Savi beginning at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, in The Lantern, located on the ground floor of the library. July 24 UC scientists test new fungicide and give Valley garlic growers hope
July 24, Davis - Garlic may soon be able to make a comeback in California thanks to a new fungicide tested by University of California scientists. 86 percent of the nation's garlic has been produced in California but in recent years due to "white rot," a rapidly spreading soil fungus that destroys garlic, onions and related plants, growers have abandoned garlic production on more than 13,000 acres of prime farmland in the San Joaquin Valley.

An inter-institutional team of researchers led by Professor Lara Kueppers of UC Merced aims to find out, using a new, $2.97 million grant from the United States Department of Energy's Program for Ecosystem Research to set up experimental research plots in the eastern Sierra Nevada.
  UC Merced Library debuts virtual showcase for Japanese art
June 22, Merced - A unique collaboration between the UC Merced Library and The Clark Center for Japanese Art and Culture gives the entire world access to more than a millennium of Japanese art via the Internet. The online collection, which debuted June 22, includes screen and scroll paintings, sculptures, prints, ceramics, textiles, metalwork and woven bamboo art, with works dating from the tenth century to the present day.
June 21 Fresno County 4-H advisor retires after 30 years of service to local children
June 21, Fresno - 4-H has defined Dave Snell’s life. As a youth his whole family was involved in 4-H, he achieved All-Star status, the highest county ranking, and also went to the National 4-H Congress, where he was awarded national honors for his field crop project. After college, Snell made 4-H his career, devoting 30 years to leading the youth development program in Fresno County. He retires at the end of June.

June 13, Fresno - UC Cooperative Extension Madera County 4-H advisor Joe Camarillo likes to tell people in Madera he was “born here, raised here, went to school here, taught here and still here.” At the end of June, after leading the 4-H program in the county for 27 years, he will be able to add “retired here” to the list.

June 12, Merced - Student demand for admission to the University of California's newest campus in Merced has risen dramatically compared with 2006, UC Merced officials said today. Based on preliminary data gathered May 31 and released by the UC system, UC Merced has received 836 Statements of Intent to Register (Sirs) for Fall 2007.

Fresno, May 23 - University of California, Merced, recently named Lyle Wright as director of its Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Regional Network . He is based at the network's lead office, which is located at the UC Merced Center in Fresno. The UC Merced SBDC Regional Network delivers counseling, training and technical assistance in all aspects of small business management.

May 21, Fresno - The UCSF Fresno Sunnyside High School Doctors Academy will honor its fifth graduating class on Tuesday, May 22 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Performing Arts Theater on the Sunnyside High School campus, located at 1019 S. Peach Avenue, in Fresno. More than 400 family members, friends and other guests will attend the ceremony. All Doctors Academy graduates will attend college in the fall. Twenty-two of the 35 graduates will attend University of California campuses

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s (LLNL) popular program, “Science on Saturday”, will be presented in a series of five free lectures to be held in the Central Valley from March 17 through May 19. The talks and demonstrations, targeted at middle and high school students, explore a wide range of topics selected from the forefront of science and technology research, including diet and cancer, the energy crisis, DNA, astrophysics and biodefense. May 5 UC Master Gardeners of Fresno Co. to hold Spring Garden Tour 2007, Fresno
Saturday, May 5 Fresno Co. UCCE Master Gardeners will host their annual Spring Garden Tour on Saturday, May 5, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event features five diverse and faxcinating home gardens as well as the Garden of the Sun demonstration garden. May 1, Merced - Students, faculty and other researchers at the University of California, Merced, now have electronic access to more than 1,100 journals published by Taylor & Francis, thanks to a new deal between the publisher and the California Digital Library (CDL), a network connecting libraries and offering digital access to materials at all 10 UC campuses.

UC scientists research how vine mealybug life stage influences response to insecticides
April 20, Davis - With funding from the UC Exotic/Invasive Pests and Diseases Research Program, scientists from UC Riverside and Riverside County UC Cooperative Extension are testing different populations of vine mealybug from the Coachella and San Joaquin Valleys for their susceptibility to the five most common pesticides used in the past few years to control them.

April 18, Fresno - Thanks to a $200,000 grant from the California Partnership for the San Joaquin Valley, the Central Valley Higher Education Consortium (CVHEC) is set to pilot a project aimed at increasing the college-going rate of Valley students, particularly those from educationally disadvantaged backgrounds.

April 14 UC Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners will offer a day of fun and educational hands-on activities for children during Youth Gardening Day. The event will be held on Saturday, April 14, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Garden of the Sun, located at 1944 N. Winery in Fresno. Children attending the event will have the opportunity to learn about composting, growing vegetables and good bugs in the garden and beekeepers will provide demonstrations and explain the importance of bees during pollination. Children will also be able to transplant a vegetable and to make a toad house to take home and place in their own gardens. The event is free and open to the public. April 5, Merced - The University of California, Merced’s efforts to establish a medical school received a boost recently in the form of a $225,000 seed grant from the California Partnership for the San Joaquin Valley. UC Merced will use the funds to start a telemedicine network, which will help improve access to healthcare in the underserved region and provide a fundamental building block for a medical school in the Valley.

The first Research Day on Monday, April 16 will also mark the first time a Nobel laureate speaks on the new campus.

Chancellor Steve Kang visiting several cities to learn more, strengthen ties
March 1, Merced - UC Merced Chancellor Steve Kang will spend part of his first hundred days in office getting better acquainted with the region as he embarks on his San Joaquin Valley Listening Tour. The tour kicks off March 19 in Merced, and the new chancellor, who takes office today (March 1), is firming plans to meet with education leaders, students, a variety of community groups, elected officials and journalists to further understand the issues and challenges facing the Valley.

The UC Center, Fresno’s spring Community ArtReach show opens on March 1 and runs through May 3. The artwork on display comprises a multi-media collection by ten Valley and Sierra foothill area artists. Also featured in the exhibit is a collection of recent artwork by Jonathan Bock, a classically trained printmaker and animator whose newest work is a synthesis of photographic and computer imaging. The exhibit may be viewed on two floors at the UC Center and is open to the public during the Center’s normal operating hours. The Center is located at 550 E. Feb. 26, Fresno - UCSF Fresno Sunnyside High School Doctors Academy students have teamed up with the Reach Out and Read Program to promote early literacy as a standard part of pediatric care. Doctors Academy students recently held a book drive on campus and collected over 700 children’s books to be presented to physicians and children involved with the Reach Out and Read program. The presentation will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 27 at the Unviersity Medical Center Children’s Health Clinic located at 4460 E. Hungtington. A speech and spoken-word contest in which area high school and college students can compete will be held on Friday, Feb. 23 in the Lantern, in the Kolligian Library. There will be a reception with free refreshments at 5:30p.m. The competition will begin at 6:00 p.m. The public is invited to attend the reception and to stay to listen as young people speak on the theme, “From the Civil Rights Era to the New Millennium: Values in the American Community.” Applications for the competition are available online and must be submitted by Friday, Feb. 16. An all-day leadership conference, “The Spirit of Togetherness”, hosted by the African American Student Association, the Office of Student Life and the Admissions Office at UC Merced will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, on campus, and will expose students to dynamic African American leaders from the community. The conference is free and open to high school juniors and seniors, college students, UC Merced faculty and staff and various community leaders. No reservations are required.

Feb 20 UCSF Fresno announces two new fellowships; Internal Medicine receives highest accreditation level
Feb. 20, Fresno - UCSF Fresno recently received approval to begin two new internal medicine fellowship training programs in cardiology and pulmonary medicine. The fellowships will expand the local medical education program’s ability to address the shortage of physicians in the San Joaquin Valley. Adding to the good news UCSF Fresno’s internal medicine program recently received a five-year accreditation, the highest level of accreditation available to a residency program.

Feb. 13, Fresno - UCSF Fresno is accepting applications for its 20th Summer Biomedical Research Internship Program, which provides Central San Joaquin Valley high school students with the opportunity to gain first-hand experience in careers in medicine and valuable research skills that will give them a competitive edge. Feb 8 UC Merced professor’s research shows irrigation hides global warming effects
Feb. 8, Merced - The prevalence of irrigation throughout California - especially in the Central Valley - could mask the effects of global warming, a new research paper indicates. Professor Lara Kueppers, with the School of Natural Sciences at UC Merced, said she and two colleagues from UC Santa Cruz began looking at how irrigation's natural cooling can affect mean temperatures in certain areas.
Feb 2 Media Advisory: Researchers to demo experimental freeze damage detection methods on citrus, Feb. 6 and 7
Feb. 2, Fresno - UC scientists will demonstrate two new experimental methods for quickly assessing whether citrus fruit has been damaged by a freeze. One method uses a modified Breathalyzer, the other uses blacklight. Preliminary evaluations on naturally frozen fruit from this January freeze indicate both approaches are promising. Currently, fruit has to be cut open to determine if it was damaged by cold weather. UC Cooperative Extension and the Citrus Research Board have arranged for afternoon open houses at two San Joaquin Valley packinghouses followed by evening visits to orange groves to demonstrate the two approaches being evaluated. Demonstrations will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 6 at 3:00 p.m. at the LoBue Brothers’ plant, 662 N. Spruce, Exeter; and on Wednesday, Feb. 7 at 4:00 p.m. at the Orange Cove-Sanger packinghouse,180 South Ave., Orange Cove; each will be followed by a 6:30 p.m. grove tour. Jan 29 Higher Education Consortium starts new year with new executive director, new location
Jan. 29, Fresno - The Central Valley Higher Education Consortium (CVHEC) recently named Cheri Cruz executive director of the non-profit organization aimed at promoting a college-going culture in the Valley.
