UC MERCED CHANCELLOR MEETS WITH COLLEGE OF THE SEQUOIAS STUDENTS
WHO: UC Merced Chancellor Steve Kang and College of the Sequoias students
WHAT: Chancellor Kang will meet with College of the Sequoias students who have an interest in math, science and engineering. Kang will hear from the students about their plans and aspirations as they continue their education. He also will share with them the many educational opportunities available at UC Merced.

WHY: As part of his first 100 days in office, UC Merced Chancellor Steve Kang is taking part in a Listening Tour throughout the San Joaquin Valley to better acquaint himself with the region and increase understanding of UC’s 10 th campus. The tour started in Merced on March 26 and was followed by visits to Modesto on April 2; Fresno on April 17 and Bakersfield on April 19. In addition to his stop in Visalia on April 26, Kang will visit Stockton on May 3. The UC Board of Regents appointed Kang as chancellor of UC Merced on Jan. 17, 2007. He took office on March 1, 2007. Prior to coming to UC Merced, he was dean of the Baskin School of Engineering at UC Santa Cruz.
BACKGROUND:
UC Merced opened Sept. 5, 2005, as the 10 th campus in the University of California system and the first American research university of the 21 st century. The campus significantly expands access to the UC system for students throughout the state, with a special mission to increase college-going rates among students in the San Joaquin Valley. It also serves as a major base of advanced research and as a stimulus to economic growth and diversification throughout the region. Situated near Yosemite National Park, the campus is expected to grow rapidly, topping out at approximately 25,000 students within 30 years.
College of the Sequoias (COS) is a comprehensive community college focused on student learning. The COS mission is to help its diverse student population achieve their transfer and /or occupational objectives and to advance the economic growth and global competitiveness of business and industry within its service region. College of the Sequoias is committed to supporting students’ mastery of basic skills and to providing programs and services that foster student success.
