Fresno - A press conference will be held on Monday, Dec. 11 beginning at 11:00 a.m. at Fresno State’s Smittcamp Alumni House. The presidents and chancellors of the colleges and universities that comprise the CVHEC have partnered with county Offices of Education and school districts throughout the Valley to develop a college-going pledge to implement proven strategies that will result in more of our Valley young people continuing their education beyond high school. Participants in the press conference will include Dr. John D. Welty, president of California State University, Fresno and outgoing CVHEC president, Dr. Frank Gornick, chancellor of West Hills Community College District and incoming CVHEC president, Dr. Roderic B. Park, acting chancellor of University of California, Merced, as well as other educational leaders, including K-12 superintendents of schools.

Oct 4 UCB and LLNL co-sponsored workshop identifies research needs to protect Valley levees
Oct. 4, Livermore - Approximately 60 research scientists, engineers, policy makers and agency representatives from around California gathered recently for a two-day workshop to define research needs in order to manage a wide range of risks facing levees in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta and the Central Valley. UC Berkeley and Lawrence Livermore co-sponsored the workshop, which was held at the University of California Center in Sacramento.

The UC Center, Fresno’s fall Community ArtReach show, “The Sierra In Contrast,” conveys the dramatic beauty of the Sierra Nevada through the different artistic expressions of two Valley women, photographer Heidi Vetter and painter Heather Anderson. Also on exhibit is raku fired pottery by Geoffrey Spach. The exhibit runs through November 2 and is open to the public free of charge during the UC Center's business hours. Kern County announces the selection of Erika Kern as All Star for the 4-H year 2006-2007. Erika is a seven year member of the Big Valley 4-H Club in Bakersfield and a sophomore at Bakersfield High School. 4-H is a UCCE sponsored youth development program open to youth 5 – 19 years of age. All Star is the highest rank that a 4-H member can earn at the county level.

June 26, Merced - The University of California, Merced submitted a proposal earlier this month to the UC Office of the President to establish a medical education program leading to a School of Medicine in the San Joaquin Valley. Jun 11 Media Advisory: Test results to be converted to UC Score in determining eligibility
July 11, Oakland - Students applying to the University of California for fall 2007 freshman admission will calculate their test scores in a slightly modified way to determine their UC eligibility. Instead of converting ACT test results to equivalent SAT scores, as is done now, applicants will convert their ACT or SAT test results into a new UC Score on a 0-100 scale.

Two Valley natives among those staying to treat patients and teach
May 30, Fresno – UCSF Fresno Medical Education Program will graduate more than 60 resident physicians in a ceremony to be held Thursday, June 8, beginning at 6:30 p.m., at Copper River Country Club (11500 North Friant Road) in Fresno. Several of the doctors in the class of 2006 will remain in the Fresno vicinity and the San Joaquin Valley to care for area residents. A total of six graduates will be staying to join the UCSF Fresno faculty or serve as chief residents during the 2006-07 academic year.

May 15, Merced - A collaborative proposal by three individuals from UC Merced has won a prestigious $25,000 grant from the Spencer Foundation's Forum for Excellence in Higher Education. The funds will be used to improve UC Merced's pre-calculus course and to start up a electronic journal of student research.

Fresno, May 9 – The UCSF Fresno Sunnyside High School Doctors Academy will honor its fourth graduating class Tuesday, May 16 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Performing Arts Theater on the Sunnyside High School campus (1019 S. Peach Ave.) in Fresno. All 32 of the graduating seniors in the Doctors Academy Program will continue their education at institutions of higher education this fall. Earlier this spring, the UCSF School of Medicine recognized five of the graduating seniors with the UCSF Merit Scholar Award, which provides the students with consideration for early admission to UCSF SOM.

The UC Center, Fresno will hold an opening reception for the winter Community ArtReach exhibit on ArtHop night, Thursday, Dec. 1 from 5:30 pm to 8:00 p.m. Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend.The exhibit features a complementary collection of artwork by three well-known local artists: mixed-media paintings by Michael Garcia; black-and-white photography by Mike Phillips and mixed-media compositions and wood-fired and raku pottery by Geoffrey Spach. The artists created their work separately using mediums and techniques unrelated to one another?s, yet the collective body of art demonstrates a strong aesthetic compatibility and relationship. The exhibit will run through Feb. 2, 2006 and is open to the public free of charge during UC Center business hours. Media Advisory: Stardust samples on display at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
Cometary and interplanetary dust samples from the NASA Stardust mission will be on display at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory on Tuesday, Jan. 31 starting at 10:00 a.m. Scientists believe Stardust will provide insight into the origins of the solar system. A team of 12 scientists from Lawrence Livermore will begin to analyze the samples using the highest energy resolution electron microscope in the world and other state-of-the-art instruments. Microscopic images of the dust samples will be projected on a monitor for viewing. Scientists will be available to discuss this work. Jan. 30, Fresno - University of California research may allow raisin growers access to the culinary mystique formerly reserved for producers of fine wines, such as color intensity, or whether the raisins impart a hint of spice or caramel, acidity or astringency. UC Davis trained panelists were able to detect these subtleties when comparing varieties that were dried on the vine with those dried on trays in the vineyard.
