UCCE Kern County 4-H selects 2006-2007 All Star

Bakersfield - 4-H is a youth development program open to youth 5 – 19 years of age. The 4-H program teaches leadership, citizenship, and life skills to its members. 4-H members learn by doing things “hands-on” in over 80 different projects in fields of consumer science, engineering, animal science, and social science.

All Star is the highest rank that a 4-H member can earn at the county level. The position of All Star is more than an award; it is a symbol of hard work and commitment. All Stars are responsible to serve as youth ambassadors of the 4-H program and have many duties that go along with it. It is an honor and a privilege to earn the rank. This year Kern County is proud and pleased to announce the selection of our All Star for the 4-H year 2006/2007.

Erika Kern is a seven year member of the Big Valley 4-H Club in Bakersfield and a sophomore at Bakersfield High School. She has been active in numerous projects during her 4-H career. Some of her projects have included camping, clothing and textiles, foods and nutrition, pygmy goats, rabbits, shooting sports, swine, and welding.

Through the years Erika has been an active ambassador for the program by attending highly visible community events and promoting 4-H through information booths and one-on-one contact. She has also served her county as an assistant instructor for the 4-H Summer Outreach Program. The Summer Outreach Program visits sites located throughout the county and brings 4-H projects to community centers and parks. She also has helped put on training workshops and activities for younger 4-H members.

In addition to her 4-H successes, Erika is also active in the Future Farmers of America and the Kern County Junior Fair Board.
