Dec. 3 UCCE's Master Gardeners celebrate Noche de las Luminarias at the Discovery Center, Fresno
UCCE Master Gardeners and the Discovery Center recreate the Christmas magic of old Santa Fe. Over 5,000 radiant candles in paper bags will illuminate the gardens and pathways at the Discovery Center's fifth annual Noche de las Luminarias (Night of the Soft Lights) on Saturday, Dec. 3, 6:00 to 9:30 p.m.  Festivities include strolling musicians, the Jolly Tradesmen carolers, crackling outdoor fires and holiday refreshments. Attendees will be able to make their own luminaria. Admission is $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for children 5-11. Tickets may be purchased at the Discovery Center gift shop, the Tower Theater and at the door. The center is located at 1944 N. Winery. For more information please call 559-251-5531.
Dec 2 UCSF Fresno partners with national initiative to improve communication between health care providers and limited English speaking patients
Dec. 2, Fresno - UCSF Fresno Medical Education Program has teamed up with Hablamos Juntos, a project supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), to improve communication between health care providers and patients who speak little or no English.

Fresno - People who would like to provide charitable food gifts to the poor during the holiday season can do more good by giving nutrition-packed donations with advice and ideas from the University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE). UCCE's nutrition programs focus on good-sense eating on a budget.

Nov.21 UC examines cost of growing summer squash, cherries and pomegranates
Nov. 21, Davis -  New cost of production studies for growing summer squash, cherries and pomegranates in the San Joaquin Valley are now available from the University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE). The studies are based upon hypothetical farms using common practices. Farm advisors, growers and researchers provided input and reviews. Nov 15 UC Davis wins $8 million grant to study health effects of air pollution
Nov. 15, Davis - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today awarded the University of California, Davis, an $8 million grant to study how air pollution harms
human health by triggering premature deaths, sending more sick people to the hospital and damaging children's lungs. The research will focus on the San Joaquin Valley.
Nov 10 Media Advisory: UC leaders meet with Fresno students and Valley's future doctors
UC President Robert C. Dynes and UC Merced Chancellor Carol Tomlinson-Keasey will meet with UCSF Fresno Doctors Academy students in class, followed by lunch in the cafeteria on Thursday, Nov. 10, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Sunnyside High School, 1019 So. Peadh Ave. in Fresno. Dynes and Tomlinson-Keasey will hear from the students about their hopes and dreams; answer questions from the students; and speak to the need for more culturally competent health care professionals in California and discuss educational options available to students at the University of California.
Nov 2 UC President visits Central Valley next week
Oakland - On Nov. 9-10, University of California President Robert C. Dynes will visit UC Merced and Fresno as part of his ongoing efforts to explore and improve upon the university's impact in regions throughout the state. To ensure that UC's contributions will continue to keep California competitive and serve the needs of all communities in the future, Dynes will host a series of events and listening sessions with UC students, faculty, staff, health providers, and business, education and agricultural partners.
Nov 2 Calling all future doctors: UCSF Fresno Doctors Academy holds information night for prospective students, Fresno
Eighth-grade students from Fresno County who are interested in enrolling as freshmen in the Doctors Academy Program at Sunnyside High School are encouraged to attend an information night with their parents on Wednesday, Nov. 2, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the performing arts theater at Sunnyside High School (1019 S. Peach Ave.) in Fresno. Current Doctors Academy students and parents will be available to answer questions and tours of the campus will be provided. Interpreters also will be available. The Doctors Academy, sponsored by the UCSF Fresno Latino Center for Medical Education and Research, is geared toward students interested in careers in the health professions. Nov 1 Poultry owners should be on the lookout for avian flu
UC offers resources and information
Nov. 1, Fresno - This fall and winter, as migratory birds make their way down the Pacific Flyway, they may be packing avian flu, including the deadly and much-publicized H5N1 variant. The University of California offers resources and information to help commercial-scale poultry producers, families with pet chickens and all poultry owners in between prevent infection, diagnose potential diseases and stop the spread should a severe bird illness be identified in the state.

Merced -  Today kicks off a "red-letter" month for students with their eyes focused on attending the University of California, Merced next year.  Students aspiring to gain freshman or transfer admission for the Fall 2006 semester are strongly encouraged to submit the University of California's Application for Undergraduate Admission and Scholarships from Nov. 1 through Nov. 30, 2005 for priority consideration.
Oct 27 UCSF Fresno's Roger K. Larson Distinguished Visiting Professorship hosts lectures on chronic lung disease by internationally recognized clinical researcher, Fresno
As part of the UCSF Fresno Roger K. Larson Distinguished Visiting Professorship lecture series two presentations by Fernando J. Martinez, MD, MS, an internationally recognized clinical researcher in the field of pulmonary medicine, will be held on Thursday, Oct. 27. Dr. Martinez is a professor of medicine at the University of Michigan whose research interests span the field of pulmonary medicine. The first lecture of the day, "Acute Exacerbations of COPD" will be presented at 12:00 p.m. in the north auditorium of University Medical Center, located at 445 So. Cedar St. Lunch will be served. At 5:00 p.m., a reception will be held in the atrium of the UCSF Fresno Center for Medical Education and Research, located at 155 No. Fresno St. The second lecture, "Update in Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease" will be presented at 6:00 p.m. in the auditorium at the UCSF Fresno Center. Oct 11 UC Merced Genome Center to encourage cooperative, efficient research
Donor-funded lab will house advanced genomics research equipment for use by several professors
Oct. 11, Merced - With genomes of humans and many other organisms sequenced, scientists worldwide now aim to discover what the genes in those genomes do and how they interact with each other. Several promising genomics researchers at the University of California, Merced, will be able to continue their advanced genomics research thanks to a $500,000 gift that will fund a high-end, cooperative laboratory facility that will include computers, robots, and other equipment to help scientists study the genes of all kinds of organisms, from bacteria to sea creatures to human beings.

Sep 30 UC Merced campus census provides updated profile of inaugural class
Thirty-Eight percent of first students hail from the Central Valley
Merced -  The new University of California campus in Merced, which opened Sept. 5, has completed its first campus census now that students have finished the process of registration of classes.With 38 percent of the students originally from the Central Valley, 27 percent from the San Francisco Bay Area and 31 percent from Southern California, they reflect California's diversity in terms of geographic regions, ethnicity and socioeconomic background.

Public opening set for Sept. 29 in Kolligian Library

Comprising passionate struggles and triumphs as well as dehumanizing forces, the story of labor in California is examined in a traveling art exhibition coming this week to the University of California, Merced.  A public reception to be held on campus in the Kolligian Library this Thursday, Sept. 29 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. marks the opening of "At Work: The Art of California Labor," which runs through Nov. 5. Sep 26 UCCE and 4-H youth seek assistance with support of Kern Co. Operation Military Kids
Bakersfield - State and County Cooperative Extension staff, community agencies, schools, and 4-H club youth are reaching out to military youth in an effort called Operation Military Kids.  The purpose of the project is to create community support networks for military youth while the parent is deployed and to provide recreational, social, and educational programs. The Kern County Operation Military Kids team is currently seeking the assistance of any interested organization or individual who would like to help in this worthwhile project.

Davis - Lander Veterinary Clinic of Turlock has received the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Norm La Faunce, president, accepted the award on behalf of the clinic Sept. 18 during the school's Fall Symposium on Recent Advances in Clinical Veterinary Medicine.

Merced - Although students at the University of California, Merced, only started classes this month, many of the university's professors and staff members have been hard at work for more than two years. Their efforts are paying off. In its short lifetime so far, UC Merced has brought in more than $15 million in grants and contracts for research and other programs.
Sep 6 Fresno UCCE's 4-H kids to give Hero Pack to military kids on Sept. 11
FresnoOn Sunday, Sept. 11, at a function for military families at the Fresno National Guard Armory, 4-H kids will be handing out shoulder backpacks full of goodies to the children of Army and Air Force National Guard and Reserve members. The Hero Pack giveaway is part of Operation: Military Kids, a national program funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and being overseen in California by the University of California Cooperative Extension.

First campus in 40 years becomes the 10th in the UC System
Merced -  With a stirring tribute to its 137-year history and a message of hope for the future, the University of California today officially opened its first new campus in 40 years - the University of California, Merced - and welcomed the inaugural class of students.  More than 4,500 people gathered at the UC Merced campus for the historic event.

DavisA new University of California study examines the production practices of growing table olives and associated costs in the San Joaquin Valley. More than 18,000 acres in the San Joaquin Valley are planted with commercial olive trees and most of those harvested olives are bound for consumers' tables.

Aug 22 Kern County 4-H Members Recognized
Bakersfield – The Kern County 4-H Achievement Program was held Aug. 13 at Lake Ming in Bakersfield. The Achievement Program is an annual event that recognizes the accomplishments of outstanding 4-H members and their dedicated leaders and supporters. The county winners also received certificates of recognition from Congressman Bill Thomas, Senator Roy Ashburn, Senator Dean Florez, Assemblyman Kevin McCarthy, and Assemblywoman Nicole Parra.

Aug 12 New winegrapes to be part of Grape Day 2005, Parlier
In an effort to improve the flavor and increase the value of San Joaquin Valley wines, University of California researchers have collected winegrape cultivars from other parts of the world to identify varieties that impart a hint of blackberry or a better tannic structure or a longer finish. Seventeen such selections will be shown at Grape Day 2005, 8 a.m. to 12 noon Aug. 12, at the UC Kearney Research and Extension Center, 9240 S. Riverbend Ave., east of Parlier. Aug 11 Madera farmer praises the benefits of soil solarization
, Davis – Tom Willey is spreading the word about solarization and how this inexpensive, chemical-free approach killed the weeds plaguing his 75-acre organic farm in the Central Valley. Willey recently participated in a workshop on solarization sponsored by University of California (UC) Cooperative Extension at his farm in Madera. , Fresno – The UCSF Fresno Alzheimers & Memory Center has received a $159,000 donation from the estate of Muriel Hagerty, a long-time resident of the San Joaquin Valley. The donation will stay in the San Joaquin Valley to benefit area residents.
Aug 9 UCSF Fresno receives grant to continue preparing local students for careers in the health professions
, Fresno – The UCSF Fresno Latino Center for Medical Education and Research recently received a $225,000 grant from The California Wellness Foundation to support the Doctors Academy at Sunnyside High School in Fresno and the Junior Doctors Academy, located at Terronez, Kings Canyon and Sequoia middle schools in southeast Fresno and Washington Colony Middle School in Easton.
Aug 9 Bank of America, UC Merced create Distinguished Management Scholars Program
, Merced – Bank of America and UC Merced announced today the awarding of a $1 million Bank of America Charitable Foundation grant. UC Merced will use the funds to establish an ongoing program to recruit, enroll and retain high-achieving, educationally disadvantaged students from the San Joaquin Valley in the new university's planned Ernest and Julio Gallo School of Management.

July 11 Governor signs 2005-06 state budget with full funding for opening of UC Merced and other key UC priorities
Oakland – The 2005-06 state budget signed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger fulfills his "compact" with the University of California, ending four years of budget cuts with increases for student enrollment growth, faculty and staff compensation, the opening of UC Merced, and an initiative to expand the training of K-12 science and math teachers.

Cultural Research in the 21st Century: Designing the UC Merced World Cultures Institute is a series of three open forums which will mark the start of this signature research institute. Each forum will focus on different aspects of the study of culture. June 23 UC to provide development, leadership training and research for community colleges
, Oakland – The University of California and the California Community Colleges are forming a new collaborative program that will provide professional development, leadership training and policy research for the community college system.
June 22 Kent Daane named grape and raisin liaison
Fresno – Kent Daane, Cooperative Extension specialist at UC Berkeley, has been appointed the University's research liaison with the California Raisin Marketing Board and the California Table Grape Commission effective July 1. Daane has studied pest control strategies for California crops since 1990 at the UC Kearney Research and Extension Center in Fresno County. He and his research staff focus on the development of ecologically based pest management systems.
June 8 Stockton native to be awarded highest student honor at UC Davis
Davis – Head Coach Bob Biggs regularly reviews the grades of his football team at the University of California, Davis and he is accustomed to seeing the kind of academic achievements that have enabled some of his players to go on to earn medical degrees or doctorates. Even so, defensive lineman Christopher Jones stood out. Others agree. The university is now recognizing the 23-year-old Stockton native -- bound for medical school this fall -- with three awards, including its highest honor for the outstanding graduating senior.

Two Valley natives are among the physicians who will stay to provide care for community members
Fresno – The UCSF Fresno Medical Education Program will graduate more than 60 resident physicians in a ceremony to be held Thursday, June 9, beginning at 6:30 p.m., at Copper River County Club (11500 North Friant Road) in Fresno. Several of the doctors in the class of 2005 will remain in the Fresno vicinity to care for area residents.

The UC Center, Fresno winter 2004-2005 Community ArtReach exhibit, “Uncommon Threads,” features the costume designs of Dunya Ramicova, a UC Merced professor in the School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts and an Emmy award-winning designer. Also featured is the work of three designers who were among the professor's former students at UCLA's theatre department M.F.A. program in costume design. In addition, the group portion of "Uncommon Threads" comprises a variety of unique, two- and three-dimensional, mixed-media arts and crafts, which incorporate the use of fabrics, fibers, and textiles. Feb. 1 UCs CalAgrAbility is an advocate for disabled farmers and farmworkers
Fresno – Fresno raisin grower Ray Austin wanted to keep farming.  However, the 53-year-old Fresno native, born with just one leg and other disabilities, was in constant pain from his ill-fitting, worn-out leg prosthesis. Though he had some medical insurance, he couldn't afford the $11,000 replacement cost. Searching the Web, Austin found CalAgrAbility, a University of California program that works with disabled farmers and farmworkers to keep them in agriculture.

Campus officials say overall student response even stronger than expected
Merced – More than 9,000 students have applied to the University of California, Merced for admission to undergraduate and graduate programs in fall 2005, according to preliminary numbers released today (Jan. 19, 2005).  For the opening year, projections have called for UC Merced to enroll 1,000 students. Initial results show strong interest from San Joaquin Valley students and many more applicants than expected from other parts of California.

Berkeley – Recent strides have been made to increase health care coverage for low income children in California, but a significant number of children in working poor families remain uninsured, according to a new study by researchers at the University of California, Berkeley.
