UC Merced to hold stem cell seminar
Oct. 20, Merced - The School of Natural Sciences at the University of California, Merced, has planned an informational seminar, Stem Cells: Biology Research and Regenerative Medicine, to be held on Thursday, Oct. 28 at 4 p.m. At the seminar, Dean Maria Pallavicini will address questions such as the following:
What are stem cells?
Where do they come from?
How are they used?
What is their potential for regenerative medicine?
Dean Pallavicini's research focuses on the genetic and functional changes that contribute to leukemia and breast cancer. She also tests new medicines for breast cancer. Before she came to Merced in 2002 as the founding dean of Natural Sciences at UC Merced, her laboratory at UC San Francisco was the first to demonstrate that cytogenetic changes leading to myeloid leukemia most likely originate in primitive stem cells.
The seminar will take place in the Redwood Room at the UC Merced facility located at the Castle Aviation and Development Center, 4225 N. Hospital Road, Building 1200, Atwater. The public is invited to attend free of charge. For more information, please contact Annette Garcia at (209) 724-4309.
