Applications for student
scholarships accepted through May 14 for UC Merced summer session
MERCED, CA – Scholarships are available
for qualified San Joaquin Valley students enrolling in the 2003
UC Merced Summer Session, which features a variety of courses presented
at UC Merced’s education and outreach centers in Fresno, Bakersfield
and Atwater. The application deadline for the UC Merced Chancellor’s
Summer Scholarship Program is May 14, 2003.
Those eligible for the scholarships include students
recently admitted by the University of California and enrolling
at any University of California campus this fall as freshmen or
as transfer students. Scholarship recipients can enroll in one UC
Merced summer course and obtain the textbooks required for that
course free of charge.
Offered in collaboration with UC Davis, the fourth
annual UC Merced Summer Session includes several courses for UC
credit offered in two sessions. Students are encouraged to enroll
by June 13 for Summer Session One, which begins June 23 and ends
August 1. Summer Session Two runs from August 4 through September
12, with a course registration deadline of July 25.

UC Merced, the 10th campus of the University
of California system, is the first major research university to
be built in the United States in the 21st century. Currently employing
approximately 120 educators and professionals, UC Merced has a special
mission to serve the educational needs of the San Joaquin Valley.
The University’s main campus in Merced is scheduled to open
in 2004 to serve 1,000 students. Over the coming decades, the campus
is expected to grow to a student population of 25,000. UC Merced
contributes to educational access through the entire San Joaquin
Valley region via educational and outreach centers in Fresno and
Bakersfield, and the Tri-College Center in Merced.
