deans named for UCSF Fresno
FRESNO - The University of California, San Francisco, (UCSF)
School of Medicine recently announced that Joan Voris, MD, has
accepted the position of associate dean for UCSF Fresno Medical
Education Program effective December 1, 2002. Voris succeeds
Deborah Stewart, MD. Earlier this fall Susan Wall, MD, was appointed
senior associate dean for UCSF Fresno and Graduate Medical Education.
Wall serves as the primary liaison between the Fresno Program
and UCSF School of Medicine Dean’s Office. |

- OAKLAND - Methods for controlling olive fruit fly, growing
mushrooms in composted food scraps, and strategies for organically
producing fruits and vegetables are among newly funded University

in a recycling program that will reduce waste and help fund

greatly expand existing recycling efforts in its offices at

artist Shannon Bickford
Fresno - The latest UC Center Fresno Community ArtReach exhibit
features a collection of mixed-media paintings by Fresno artist,
Shannon Bickford. Bickford's paintings combine elements from
science and nature with dream-like images of flowers, birds,
cats and people. Recently her work has been exhibited at the
Fresno Art Museum. Numerous other artists' work is also on display
at Community ArtReach. The fall exhibit will run through November
7. The public is invited to view the exhibit free of charge

the San Joaquin Valley farmers who have already participated
in the UC Davis Farmer Health Study to travel to the UC Davis

Groundbreaking
ceremony Sept. 24 for $3 million state-funded greenhouse at
the UC Kearney Research and Extension Center
Parlier - UC and agricultural officials will break ground at
10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, for a 20,000-square-foot greenhouse
at the UC Kearney Research and Extension Center near Parlier.
The new U-shaped greenhouse will have a 5,000-square-foot headhouse
and 24 modules individually controlled for light and temperature.
Each module is designed to isolate insects and other pests.
Research in the new greenhouse will include studies of air pollution,
plant water use, and insect, virus and disease control. |

study reveals some low-income families fail to receive services
intended to help them
Rural low-income families are not taking full advantage
of support and assistance programs that are known to improve
financial situations and increase children’s well being,
according to UC Cooperative Extension (UCCE) consumer education
researchers taking part in a 15-state study that looks at the
impact of welfare reform in rural America. In California, 40
mostly Latino low-income families in Madera and Kern counties
are being tracked over the course of three years. |

Internship Program - FRESNO - High school students
from Fresno, Clovis, Atwater, Visalia and Tulare will graduate
from the highly competitive University of California, San Francisco,
Fresno (UCSF Fresno) Summer Biomedical Internship Program tonight
(Aug. 12). Students from across the Valley apply each summer
to participate in the rigorous 10-week program and only 10 students
are selected. Students are admitted based on academic merit,
questionnaires, transcripts, SAT exam scores, and letters of

$10 million endowment To be created - MODESTO
- Sowing the seeds of a new comprehensive management school
in the San Joaquin Valley, the home of its global business,
the Ernest & Julio Gallo Winery has provided the lead
gift to stimulate creation of a $10 million endowment at the
University of California, Merced. The announcement came today
(Aug. 9) from University President Richard Atkinson and Merced
Campus Chancellor Carol Tomlinson-Keasey.

UC research tracks plants'
responses to ozone exposure - FRESNO - While
the San Joaquin Valley's high levels of ozone aggravate the
lungs of asthmatics, young children and the elderly, agricultural
crops and native plants are also suffering - although nobody
knows exactly how.
To find out, David Grantz, a UC scientist at the Kearney
Agricultural Center near Parlier has undertaken a multi-year
study aimed not at the effect of ozone on yield or plant vigor,
but to determine what happens to plant tissues when they grow
in the presence of ozone.

UC Merced Offers Spanish-Language
Immersion Program for Kids - Fresno -
UC Merced will offer a summer Spanish-Language Immersion Program
for kindergartners and first graders who speak little to no
Spanish. The goal of the program is to introduce children to
the Spanish language through drama, music, art, science, stories
and games. All instruction will be conducted in Spanish and
led by a credentialed, elementary Spanish-immersion teacher.

Field Day Shows First Precision Ag Equipment Being Used in
the San Joaquin Valley - Kings County -
UC Cooperative Extension will host a field day and tour from
8 to 11:30 a.m. on Friday, July 26 in Kings County to demonstrate
the first precision agriculture equipment, guidance systems
and yield monitors being used in the San Joaquin Valley. Precision
farming is the treatment of crops precisely when and where
it is needed. The common practice is to apply seed, pesticides
and fertilizer uniformly over entire fields. Precision agriculture
relies on airborne or satellite sensing and the use of sophisticated
mathematical tools to detect and map the crop health or stress
state and identify which specific areas need specific treatments.

Merced Announces Concurrent Admissions Program
Pilot Program
Partners New Campus with Community Colleges in Merced, Modesto,
Fresno
MERCED - A $192,500 planning grant from the Ford Foundation
will permit the University of California, Merced to develop
a Concurrent Admissions Program with three San Joaquin Valley
community colleges. The funding will support an 18-month pilot
program guaranteeing UC Merced admission to selected students
attending community college in the fall of 2002 upon completion
of their academic plan requirements. Partnering UC Merced with
Modesto Junior College, Merced College and Fresno City College
and their feeder high schools, the initial phase of the concurrent
admissions pilot will involve a combined total of approximately
120 students. |

Parlier, CA - The University of California has named Anil Shrestha
to the position of integrated pest management weed ecologist,

Fresno Only California Program Named in Nationwide Model AAMC
Study
Fresno, CA - The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC)
will be sending a team to Fresno on March 6, 2002 to study the
success of the University of California San Francisco, Fresno
Medical Education Programs regional medical school campus.
The purpose of the study is to understand the structure, organization,
operations and management of US medical schools regional
campuses. UCSF Fresno is one of only ten medical school programs
nationwide asked to participate in the study and the only regional

Helps Students and Parents Complete Financial Aid Forms
Fresno, CA - Representatives from UC Merced's Office of Relations
with Schools will help students and parents complete the Free
Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on Sunday, Feb.
24 at the UC Center, Fresno (550 E. Shaw Ave., across from Fashion
Fair Mall). Workshops will be presented in English and Spanish
from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. There is no cost
to attend. The FAFSA is a required financial aid form that is
used to determine a student's eligibility for federal and state
grants, work-study and loans. FAFSA and GPA verification forms

Science Workshop for 4th-6th Grade Teachers
A free workshop, open to Fresno County teachers of grades four,
