UC
MERCED SUPPORTS LITERACY AWARENESS EFFORTS IN STOCKTON
FRESNO
- The University of California, Merced and UC Office of the President
will participate in "Family Day at the Park" tomorrow,
Saturday, Sept. 21 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Victory Park
in Stockton.
UC
Merced representatives will be available to answer questions about
the University of California's 10th campus including admissions
requirements, academic programs, and student life.
"We
see Stockton and the entire San Joaquin Valley as a rich source
of students for the University of California," said Encarnacion
Ruiz, UC Merced's director of admissions. "This event is an
excellent way to communicate with local students and parents about
the affordability and accessibility of a UC Merced education."
The
UC Merced/UC Office of the President booth also will feature word
games and prizes for children.
Thousands of people are expected to attend the event, which is sponsored
by The Record and aimed at increasing literacy awareness. About
80 organizations will be represented with booths and activities
for the whole family.
Background:
UC
Merced is scheduled to open in 2004 with 1,000 students, ultimately
growing to serve 25,000 undergraduate and graduate students over
the next three to four decades. At present, the University employs
nearly 100 educators and professionals who are already serving Valley
residents with a variety of services such as UC undergraduate admissions
counseling, UC summer sessions, and professional development workshops.
