UC to host six counselor conferences
OAKLAND - The University of California will host six conferences
across the state for high school and community college counselors
from September 12-20. The conferences aim to inform California's
high school and community college staff about how they can help
their students gain admission to UC.
Counselors are one of the most important sources of university
information for California's students. More than 6,000 counselors
are expected to attend at least one of the conferences.
Through panel discussions, workshops and publications, conference
participants will learn about a wide range of topics, including
UC admissions, financial aid and housing. Sessions will focus on
how UC evaluates applications under its new comprehensive review
admissions policy and explain how to finance a UC education. Workshops
will be offered on writing personal statements, and presentations
on admissions tests will be delivered by ACT and the College Board.
Counselors will also get an update on UC Merced and the Dual Admissions
Program.
The conferences are open to all those who advise students about
higher education, including high school and community college counselors,
deans of students, transfer center directors, career guidance counselors,
principals and faculty.
Participants will be able to ask representatives from all nine
UC undergraduate campuses questions about the University of California
as well as network with colleagues.
The cooperation between UC, community colleges and high schools
helps build college-going cultures in all areas of California.
Opening sessions at the conferences will begin at 8:30 a.m. Workshops
and in-depth demonstrations start at 9:30 a.m. and continue until
4:30 p.m. each day.
The conference schedule:
- UC Irvine: Thursday, Sept. 12, Bren Events Center
- Cañada Community College: Friday, Sept. 13, gymnasium
- UC Berkeley: Saturday, Sept. 14, Wheeler Hall
