Valley home gardeners to see a kaleidoscope of citrus

FRESNO - Retail nurseries stock only the most popular citrus varieties, but the fruit has much more to offer. The public is invited to taste and see more than 75 unique and delicious varieties of citrus fruit at the UC Lindcove Research and Extension Center between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 14.

A colorful display with dozens of varieties of navel oranges, lemons, kumquats, mandarins, citrons, grapefruits and pummelos will fill the center's packing shed.

Visitors may sample blood oranges, green-fleshed pummelos, red grapefruits, acid-free oranges, sweet lemons and new mandarin varieties imported from around the world. They will find varieties that peel easily, have few or no seeds, and balance tang and sweetness just right for every taste. Buddha's hand citrons, an inedible fruit with rind that grows like outstretched fingers, will also be on display.

Participants will have the rare opportunity to see the 175-acre UC Lindcove Research and Extension Center near Exeter. Situated where the Valley floor begins its ascent to the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Lindcove is considered one of the most beautiful research and extension centers in a statewide network that includes 12 stations.

The center's location provides the ideal environment for citrus research. Founded in 1959, Lindcove has played a major role in generating and extending to California citrus growers the latest scientific information on disease prevention, insect management, irrigation, nutrition and freeze protection. In addition, Lindcove houses UC's Foundation Block, a grove of citrus trees used to propagate a wide variety of disease-free, true-to-type citrus for California growers.

Citrus viewing and tasting are free and registration is not required. The UC Lindcove Research and Extension Center is off Highway 198, east of Visalia at 22963 Carson Ave., in Lindcove. For more information call Jennifer Logan at (559) 592-2408, Ext. 12; mailto:jlogan@ucdavis.edu
