COMMUNITY ARTREACH EXHIBIT AT UC CENTER, FRESNO FEATURES PAINTINGS AND SCULPTURE BY NOTED VALLEY ARTIST MICHAEL GARCIA

On-going exhibit enters second year of displaying original works of fine art to the community

FRESNO - An opening reception for the UC Center, Fresno's summer Community ArtReach exhibit will be held on Thursday, June 6 from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the center, located at 550 E. Shaw Avenue.

The event, one of the Fresno Arts Council's ArtHop venues, is open to the public free of charge. Artists will be available to answer questions about their work, and light refreshments will be served.

This newest exhibit features a collection of contemporary paintings and sculpture by the innovative and talented Valley artist Michael Garcia. Garcia's work has been exhibited in both solo and group shows in the San Joaquin Valley and in Japan. He has been honored at the Nagoya International Center Foreign Artist Exhibition and is the recipient of a State of California Senate Certificate of Recognition.

Many of Garcia's pieces are constructed by embedding Asian calligraphy into heavily worked layers of enamel, house paint and wax applied on wood. The work strongly reflects the ten years Garcia spent traveling, studying and living in Japan.

The summer Community ArtReach exhibition also includes the work of Jim Armstrong, Cynthia Benno, Carolyn DeAnda, Sally Delap-John, Donnalee Dunne, Linda Erickson, Helen Gigliotti, Kathy Gillis, Richard Haas, Aileen Imperatrice, Rubik Kocharian, John Lucas, Buffy Morris, Jeffrey Morris, Steve Norton, Sara Peters, Scott Shaver, Arminee Shishmanian, H. J. Smith, John Wiens, and Tiwi Wood.

The current exhibition comprises oil, watercolor and mixed-media paintings, photography, pottery, bronze and mixed-media sculpture, and fine handcrafted furniture.

Thousands of visitors at the UC Center, Fresno have viewed many works of fine art thanks to the Community ArtReach program. More than 60 artists have been featured as part of the on-going exhibit at the center, which is now in its second year.

Community ArtReach is a collaborative effort by University of California staff members and partners at the UC Center, Fresno, and Buffy Morris of Morris & Co. Fine Art in Fresno. The program's aim is to support and encourage the creativity of Valley artists and expose the community to fine works of art.

The exhibit will be ongoing from June 6 to August 1, 2002, and is open to the public during normal UC Center, Fresno operating hours. For more information about Community ArtReach, please call Jeanie Smith at (559) 241-7510.
