UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA ENCOURAGES VALLEY STUDENTS TO ENROLL

FRESNO - The University of California is making a spirited effort this spring to encourage San Joaquin Valley students to enroll at a UC campus. This year's activities in the Valley and throughout the state represent UC's ongoing commitment to expand access to a UC education for all qualified students.

Students applying to UC receive offers of freshman admission during the months of March and April and must sign a statement of intent to register by May 1. Community college students transferring to a UC campus must sign a statement of intent to register by June 1.

The University of California admitted 3 percent more students from the southern San Joaquin Valley and 2.8 percent more from the northern San Joaquin Valley this year versus last year.

These figures are preliminary and will change as the university extends offers of admission to UC-eligible students who could not be accommodated at the campuses to which they applied.

The University of California is now working to ensure that admitted students enroll this fall.

In the San Joaquin Valley, the UC Merced Office of Relations with Schools staff will hold a series of events during April to recognize student achievement, stress the affordability of a UC education and encourage students accepted by UC to enroll.

"Our outreach counselors work year-round with Valley students and educators to communicate that a UC education is affordable, accessible and within their reach," said Encarnacion Ruiz, UC Merced's director of admissions. "Now is the time when we recognize the academic accomplishments of the students who have been admitted to UC and encourage them to take advantage of the opportunity they've earned."

During April, 13 UC campus visits are planned for prospective freshmen and their parents on a first-come, first-served basis. These visits will take place at the Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Diego, Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz campuses. In addition, three overnight trips to Irvine, Riverside, San Diego and Santa Barbara are scheduled as part of UC Merced's UC Scholars Early Academic Outreach Program. (Please see attachment for complete list of campus visits and other activities.)

The trips provide Valley students and their parents an opportunity to learn about UC academic
programs and student services, along with a chance to experience the UC campus environment together.

Other spring activities aimed at increasing the number of Valley students who enroll at UC include direct mailings and a reception on April 17 for prospective freshmen and their parents at the UC Center, Fresno (550 E. Shaw Ave., across from Fashion Fair Mall).

Background:

Located at the UC Center, Fresno, the UC Merced Office of Relations with Schools (ORS) is the Valley's local source for information on UC admission, financial aid, academic majors, campus visits, and all undergraduate educational opportunities. Staff members work year-round with middle schools, high schools and community colleges in the San Joaquin Valley and mountain communities, serving more than 25,000 area students. In the spring, ORS efforts focus on encouraging Valley admits to enroll.

The Office of Relations with Schools consists of three departments: general outreach, community college transfers and UC Scholars Early Academic Outreach Program. UC Scholars is an early outreach program that serves educationally disadvantaged students including low-income and first-generation college students in grades 6-12 who have the potential to enroll at the University of California. Students who participate in UC Scholars receive a variety of services throughout their educational career, including summer enrichment programs, trips to UC campuses and various academic workshops. Similar services are provided to parents and guardians of UC Scholars students.
