UCSF Fresno Continuing Dental Education Program
February to December, 2002

UCSF Fresno offers Continuing Dental Educational programs in the Central Valley. The Friday lectures are presented by faculty from institutions such as the University of California, Los Angeles, University of the Pacific, Loma Linda, University of Colorado and the University of Southern California. New deans named for UCSF Fresno
FRESNO - The University of California, San Francisco, (UCSF) School of Medicine recently announced that Joan Voris, MD, has accepted the position of associate dean for UCSF Fresno Medical Education Program effective December 1, 2002. Voris succeeds Deborah Stewart, MD. Earlier this fall Susan Wall, MD, was appointed senior associate dean for UCSF Fresno and Graduate Medical Education. Wall serves as the primary liaison between the Fresno Program and UCSF School of Medicine Dean’s Office.

Kern County 4-H member receives state and national recognition
- BAKERSFIELD - Kern County 4-H member Kathryn Ball was recently selected to represent California at the 2003 National 4-H Conference in Chevy Chase, Maryland. The National 4-H Conference is an annual event planned and conducted by the Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension System of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Conferencia para agricultores
- PARLIER - Fresno County UC Cooperative Extension will offer its annual conference to Spanish-speaking, small family farmers in the Central Valley on Tuesday, Dec. 10, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Kearney Agricultural Center (9240 S. Riverbend) in Parlier. The conference will be presented entirely in Spanish. Topics include: disease management, pest and weed control, almonds as an alternative crop, farm loans and disaster assistance, specialty crops, and pesticide laws for 2003. Fresno County UCCE sponsors holiday event at the Discovery Center
- FRESNO - Noche de las Luminarias, sponsored in part by the UC Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners, will be held Saturday, Dec. 7 from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Discovery Center (1944 N. Winery) in Fresno. Guests are invited to tour the gardens by candlelight, make holiday keepsakes, and enjoy holiday music and refreshments with a southwestern flair. UC awards $1.8 million for specialty crop projects
- OAKLAND - Methods for controlling olive fruit fly, growing mushrooms in composted food scraps, and strategies for organically producing fruits and vegetables are among newly funded University of California research projects. UC’s Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR) has awarded $1.8 million for specialty crop research. These ANR grants are part of Governor Gray Davis' Buy California Initiative, which is administered by the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA).

Recycling for scholarships: UC Merced commits to the fourth “R”
- MERCED - The University of California, Merced is engaging in a recycling program that will reduce waste and help fund scholarships for local students. Funded by the State Department of Conservation and administered by the Merced County Association of Governments (MCAG), the grant program permits UC Merced to greatly expand existing recycling efforts in its offices at Castle Airport Aviation and Development Center.

UCSF Fresno presents air pollution data
- FRESNO - The University of California, San Francisco, Fresno Medical Education Program’s (UCSF Fresno) Department of Internal Medicine, will present a panel discussion titled, "Air Pollution: Is it Killing You?" The discussion will take place Monday, Nov. 18 at 5 p.m. in the UCSF Fresno Rowell Auditorium at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital. The discussion is sponsored by a grant from UCSF Fresno’s Roger K. Larsen, MD, Visiting Professorship Fund.

Private giving to UC Merced builds momentum in 2001-02
- ATWATER - The University of California, Merced experienced a remarkable demonstration of private support during 2001-02, receiving more than $22 million in gifts and grants to further development of the 10th UC campus. This figure represents a 440 percent increase in private giving from the previous year and critical funding for the first UC campus in the San Joaquin Valley.

Fall Community ArtReach exhibit at UC Center, Fresno features Fresno artist Shannon Bickford
Fresno - The latest UC Center Fresno Community ArtReach exhibit features a collection of mixed-media paintings by Fresno artist, Shannon Bickford. Bickford's paintings combine elements from science and nature with dream-like images of flowers, birds, cats and people. Recently her work has been exhibited at the Fresno Art Museum. Numerous other artists' work is also on display at Community ArtReach. The fall exhibit will run through November 7. UC Merced Library wins federal grant for Japanese art project
MERCED - The University of California, Merced Library, in collaboration with the Hanford, California-based Ruth and Sherman Lee Institute for Japanese Art at the Clark Center, has been awarded a $229,276 grant to create digital copies of the Japanese art and research collection of the Lee Institute.

Governor Davis to deliver keynote address at UC Merced inauguration and founding celebration Nobel Laureate in Physics Robert Laughlin to Deliver Academic Address
MERCED - Gov. Gray Davis and Nobel Laureate Robert Laughlin will be among the featured speakers at a ceremony inaugurating the chancellor of UC Merced and celebrating the creation of the 10th campus of the UC system. The event will be held, beginning at 11 a.m., on Friday, Oct. 25 at the future site of the Merced campus.

MERCED - In recognition of the importance of the Native American community in the San Joaquin Valley and Sierra Nevada, the University of California, Merced will participate in two upcoming collaborative efforts with local tribal representatives. The future campus site of the University of California, Merced will be blessed by local Native American tribes on Tuesday, October 22, 2002, and the First Annual Central Valley Chapter of California Indian Education Association/UC Merced Benefit Pow Wow will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2002.

Noted university administrator Esteban Soriano named Vice Chancellor at UC Merced
MERCED - Esteban Soriano, a noted university fund-raiser and management consultant, has been named vice chancellor for University Advancement at the University of California, Merced. It was announced today (Oct. 17) by Chancellor Carol Tomlinson-Keasey. The appointment is subject to the approval of the University of California Board of Regents.

UC seeks farmer cooperation in long-term study of farmers' health
FRESNO - University of California scientists are asking 50 of the San Joaquin Valley farmers who have already participated in the UC Davis Farmer Health Study to travel to the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento for complete lung function testing, including spirometry and a high-resolution CAT scan. The farmers will receive free accommodations and compensation for their time and travel expenses.

Groundbreaking ceremony Sept. 24 for $3 million state-funded greenhouse at the UC Kearney Research and Extension Center
Parlier - UC and agricultural officials will break ground at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, for a 20,000-square-foot greenhouse at the UC Kearney Research and Extension Center near Parlier. The new U-shaped greenhouse will have a 5,000-square-foot headhouse and 24 modules individually controlled for light and temperature. Each module is designed to isolate insects and other pests. Research in the new greenhouse will include studies of air pollution, plant water use, and insect, virus and disease control.

Peterson, MD, joins UCSF Fresno from the University of Iowa, where he served as Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine.

MERCED – The University of California, Merced and The Nature Conservancy have announced finalization of a conservation easement on 5,030 acres of the former Virginia Smith Trust (VST) property, located in the eastern portion of Merced County.

UC study reveals some low-income families fail to receive services intended to help them
Rural low-income families are not taking full advantage of support and assistance programs that are known to improve financial situations and increase children’s well being, according to UC Cooperative Extension (UCCE) consumer education researchers taking part in a 15-state study that looks at the impact of welfare reform in rural America. In California, 40 mostly Latino low-income families in Madera and Kern counties are being tracked over the course of three years.

UC Merced to host seminar, "The Vanishing Right of Self-Defense in England", 2002
UC Merced will host a seminar by Joyce Malcolm, titled "The Vanishing Right of Self-Defense in England." Dr. Malcolm is an historian and professor at Bentley College whose work has focused on the developing relationship between the individual and the state, and on the human dimensions of war.

UC unveils new farming practices - FRESNO - Media representatives are invited to a conservation tillage press tour Friday, Aug. 30 from 10 a.m. to noon at the University of California's West Side Research and Extension Center (17353 W. Oakland Ave.) in Five Points. The tour will acquaint reporters with new farming practices that growers and researchers are developing in California's Central Valley.

UC Merced seminar features world-renowned computer scientist - Atwater
UC Merced will host a seminar by world-renowned computer scientist
and mathematician David Keyes. Keyes will discuss his work involving the use of
parallel and high performance computing to better understand complex physical
processes, and will share his views on innovation in science and engineering

Valley high school students to graduate from UCSF Fresno's Summer Biomedical Internship Program - FRESNO - High school students from Fresno, Clovis, Atwater, Visalia and Tulare will graduate from the highly competitive University of California, San Francisco, Fresno (UCSF Fresno) Summer Biomedical Internship Program tonight (Aug. 12). Students from across the Valley apply each summer to participate in the rigorous 10-week program and only 10 students are selected. Students are admitted based on academic merit, questionnaires, transcripts, SAT exam scores, and letters of recommendation. Tonight, Monday, August 12, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., the biomedical students will present their research projects at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital Auditorium in Fresno.

Ernest & Julio Gallo Winery gift creates new school of management at the University of California, Merced
$10 million endowment To be created - MODESTO - Sowing the seeds of a new comprehensive management school in the San Joaquin Valley, the home of its global business, the Ernest & Julio Gallo Winery has provided the lead gift to stimulate creation of a $10 million endowment at the University of California, Merced. The announcement came today (Aug. 9) from University President Richard Atkinson and Merced Campus Chancellor Carol Tomlinson-Keasey.

UC research tracks plants' responses to ozone exposure - FRESNO - While the San Joaquin Valley's high levels of ozone aggravate the lungs of asthmatics, young children and the elderly, agricultural crops and native plants are also suffering - although nobody knows exactly how.

To find out, David Grantz, a UC scientist at the Kearney Agricultural Center near Parlier has undertaken a multi-year study aimed not at the effect of ozone on yield or plant vigor, but to determine what happens to plant tissues when they grow in the presence of ozone.

UC Merced Offers Spanish-Language Immersion Program for Kids - Fresno -
UC Merced will offer a summer Spanish-Language Immersion Program for kindergartners and first graders who speak little to no Spanish. The goal of the program is to introduce children to the Spanish language through drama, music, art, science, stories and games. All instruction will be conducted in Spanish and led by a credentialed, elementary Spanish-immersion teacher. This program will be held at the UC Center, Fresno (550 E. Shaw Ave.) from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., daily, June 17 through August 9. The cost is $500 per student for the eight-week program. Space is limited. Reedley Girl's Grand Prize Billboard to go up on Manning Avenue
- FRESNO - A love of drawing has paid off for 10-year-old Marci Thiessen of Reedley. The Washington Elementary School sixth-grader won the California Children's 5 a Day-Power Play! Campaign poster contest and will see her creation on a Manning Avenue billboard near Reedley for the month of August. The California Department of Health Services, the United States Department of Agriculture and the Public Health Institute direct the statewide campaign. UCCE Field Day Shows First Precision Ag Equipment Being Used in the San Joaquin Valley - Kings County -
UC Cooperative Extension will host a field day and tour from 8 to 11:30 a.m. on Friday, July 26 in Kings County to demonstrate the first precision agriculture equipment, guidance systems and yield monitors being used in the San Joaquin Valley. Precision farming is the treatment of crops precisely when and where it is needed. The common practice is to apply seed, pesticides and fertilizer uniformly over entire fields. Precision agriculture relies on airborne or satellite sensing and the use of sophisticated mathematical tools to detect and map the crop health or stress state and identify which specific areas need specific treatments. Insect Enthusiast is New Entomology Advisor for UCCE in Kern County - BAKERSFIELD - A native of Salinas, CA, David Haviland turned his lifelong interest in insects into a career as the new entomology farm advisor for UC Cooperative Extension in Kern County. UC Merced Announces Concurrent Admissions Program
Pilot Program Partners New Campus with Community Colleges in Merced, Modesto, Fresno
MERCED - A $192,500 planning grant from the Ford Foundation will permit the University of California, Merced to develop a Concurrent Admissions Program with three San Joaquin Valley community colleges. The funding will support an 18-month pilot program guaranteeing UC Merced admission to selected students attending community college in the fall of 2002 upon completion of their academic plan requirements. Partnering UC Merced with Modesto Junior College, Merced College and Fresno City College and their feeder high schools, the initial phase of the concurrent admissions pilot will involve a combined total of approximately 120 students.

Weed Ecologist Anil Shrestha Joins the UC Kearney Agricultural Center Academic Staff
Parlier, CA - The University of California has named Anil Shrestha to the position of integrated pest management weed ecologist, based at the UC Kearney Agricultural Center near Parlier. In his new position, Shrestha will work closely with scientists at UC's Berkeley, Riverside and Davis campuses and farm advisors based in Central Valley counties to develop integrated weed management systems. Valley Native Selected as UC Merced’s First Director of Admissions

UCSF Fresno Only California Program Named in Nationwide Model AAMC Study
Fresno, CA - The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) will be sending a team to Fresno on March 6, 2002 to study the success of the University of California San Francisco, Fresno Medical Education Programs’ regional medical school campus. The purpose of the study is to understand the structure, organization, operations and management of US medical schools’ regional campuses. UC Helps Students and Parents Complete Financial Aid Forms
Fresno, CA - Representatives from UC Merced's Office of Relations with Schools will help students and parents complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on Sunday, Feb. 24 at the UC Center, Fresno (550 E.
