For the first time, the University of California Lindcove Research
and Extension Center (22963 Carson Ave., near Exeter) opens
its doors to homeowners who want to taste and see the wide variety
of citrus fruit that can be grown in Central Valley backyards.
The event runs from 10 a.m. to 12 noon Saturday, Dec. 15. More
than 75 varieties of citrus fruit - including dozens of navel
orange varieties, lemons, mandarins, citrons, grapefruit, and

Regents Approve Medical Education and Research Center for UCSF

San Francisco/Fresno, CA - The University of California Board
of Regents handed down a unanimous decision late yesterday afternoon
approving the building of the $26 million state-of-the-art medical
education and research center for the University of California,
San Francisco, Fresno Medical Education Program (UCSF Fresno).
The decision signifies the final approval of environmental documentation
and design to construct the Medical Education and Research Center
(MERC) in downtown Fresno adjacent to the Community Regional
Medical Center. |

disease confirmed in Kern County vineyards
Kern Co. - Pierce's disease has been confirmed in a dozen
vineyards east of Bakersfield, according to a summer-long
monitoring program led by University of California Cooperative
Extension viticulture farm advisor Jennifer Hashim.

and other officials are working with farmers to remove and
destroy the approximately 600 infected vines to avoid further
spread of the incurable and fatal disease.

Study Finds Underrepresented Minority Physicians More Likely
to Practice in California Following School and Residency in
State
San Francisco, CA - A UCSF study of the migration patterns of
underrepresented minority Californians in medicine found that
those who attend medical schools in the state are more likely
to enter residency programs in California and remain in the
state to practice. However, a decreasing number of California
minorities who attend medical school are entering medical schools
in California. The report was issued November 1 by the California
Policy and Research Center/Program on Access to Care. Recommendations
include developing a new University of California program in

Kashian
Commitment Will Support UC Merced Library
Merced, CA - The University of California, Merceds recently
named Kolligian Library also will honor one of Fresnos
leading developers, according to an announcement by Chancellor
Carol Tomlinson-Keasey.
The
first floor of the Leo and Dottie Kolligian Library, one of
the first buildings to be constructed on the new campus, will
be named for Ed and Jeanne Kashian in recognition of the leadership
and support that the Kashians have directed to UC Merced.
In addition, they are making a substantial contribution to
support an endowment for the central library, named in honor
of their lifelong friends and business partners, Leo Kolligian
and his late wife, Dottie.

World Cultures Institute Library Fundraiser, the Thondapu Family
Endowed Chair is a gift from Ramakrishna Thondapu, M.D.; his
wife, Sumana; and their children, Vikas and Ramesh. This will
be the 10th endowed chair established at UC Merced, which has
received a greater number of such endowments than any other

Dooley and UC Usher In New Economic Opportunities for San
Joaquin Valley Ethnic Families, Fresno
UC Cooperative Extension in Fresno County will coordinate
the education programs at the new Small Farm Resource and
Training Center, which will celebrate its grand opening Friday,
April 20, with a presentation by U.S. Rep. Cal Dooley and
ethnic food tasting, tours and displays. A network comprised
of two-dozen agencies, public and private, has worked to create
this new facility, the only farm incubator in the San Joaquin
Valley.
The
center, located at 538 W. North Ave. in Fresno, is a 20-acre
farm and classroom facility developed to create new opportunities
in agriculture for Hispanic, Southeast Asian, African-American
and other ethnic families.

Merced Science Workshop, Yosemite National Park
The UC Merced, Division of Professional Studies, the Lawrence
Hall of Science, and the Yosemite Institute will present the
second annual hands-on science workshop for valley 4th through
6th grade teachers, Monday, April 16 through Thursday, April
19, beginning at 4:00 p.m. at Curry Village in Yosemite National
Park.
The
program will offer three, six-hour workshops covering four
units of the Lawrence Hall of Science's Great Explorations
in Math and Science (GEMS) curriculum. Units include: Terrarium
Habitats, Aquatic Habitats, Stories in Stone, and Investigating
Artifacts. Strategies for teaching hands-on science will also
be covered.
