UC Invites Public to Citrus Variety Tasting
For the first time, the University of California Lindcove Research and Extension Center (22963 Carson Ave., near Exeter) opens its doors to homeowners who want to taste and see the wide variety of citrus fruit that can be grown in Central Valley backyards. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 12 noon Saturday, Dec. 15. More than 75 varieties of citrus fruit - including dozens of navel orange varieties, lemons, mandarins, citrons, grapefruit, and pummelos - will be displayed. Merced, CA - Merced County UC Cooperative Extension farm advisor Lonnie Hendricks retired this fall after devoting 41 years to the improvement of almond, walnut, pistachio, and apricot production in the San Joaquin Valley.

University Square Partners Celebrate Grand Opening on Dec. 12
Bakersfield, CA --- Student science displays, musical performances, art exhibits and facility tours will highlight the grand opening celebration of a new facility that includes the University of California, Merced, Bakersfield Center on Wednesday, December 12, 2001. Festivities at the new downtown building, located at 2000 K Street, include an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. and the grand opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m.

UC Center Features "What Freedom Means to Me", a Collection of Children's Art
The UC Center, Fresno's winter Community ArtReach exhibit will feature the work of local children. "What Freedom Means to Me," a collection of approximately sixty watercolor paintings by fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade students at Thomas Elementary School in Fresno, will be on display at the center from Dec. 6 through mid-February 2002. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, Dec. 6 from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the UC Center, Fresno, 550 E. Shaw Ave. (across from Fashion Fair Mall). The artists, their parents and the public are invited.

UC Merced, in partnership with the Lawrence Hall of Science and the Yosemite Institute, is offering its third annual hands-on-science workshop for 4th-6th grade teachers in Yosemite from December 2-5, 2001 with a follow up sessions in Merced on January 18th. The National Association of Hispanic Journalists, UC Office of the President and UC Merced invite working print and broadcast journalists to polish their skills at a free professional development conference, Saturday, Dec. 1 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the UC Center, Fresno. Fresno County 4-H youth aged 16 (or juniors in high school) but no older than 19 by April 13, 2002 are eligible to apply as delegates for the National 4-H Conference. Adult volunteers age 25 and up are also eligible to apply.

UC Regents Approve Medical Education and Research Center for UCSF Fresno
San Francisco/Fresno, CA - The University of California Board of Regents handed down a unanimous decision late yesterday afternoon approving the building of the $26 million state-of-the-art medical education and research center for the University of California, San Francisco, Fresno Medical Education Program (UCSF Fresno). The decision signifies the final approval of environmental documentation and design to construct the Medical Education and Research Center (MERC) in downtown Fresno adjacent to the Community Regional Medical Center.

Pierce's disease confirmed in Kern County vineyards
Kern Co. - Pierce's disease has been confirmed in a dozen vineyards east of Bakersfield, according to a summer-long monitoring program led by University of California Cooperative Extension viticulture farm advisor Jennifer Hashim.

UC and other officials are working with farmers to remove and destroy the approximately 600 infected vines to avoid further spread of the incurable and fatal disease.

UCSF Study Finds Underrepresented Minority Physicians More Likely to Practice in California Following School and Residency in State
San Francisco, CA - A UCSF study of the migration patterns of underrepresented minority Californians in medicine found that those who attend medical schools in the state are more likely to enter residency programs in California and remain in the state to practice. However, a decreasing number of California minorities who attend medical school are entering medical schools in California. The report was issued November 1 by the California Policy and Research Center/Program on Access to Care. Recommendations include developing a new University of California program in the Central Valley

Kashian Commitment Will Support UC Merced Library
Merced, CA - The University of California, Merced’s recently named Kolligian Library also will honor one of Fresno’s leading developers, according to an announcement by Chancellor Carol Tomlinson-Keasey.

The first floor of the Leo and Dottie Kolligian Library, one of the first buildings to be constructed on the new campus, will be named for Ed and Jeanne Kashian in recognition of the leadership and support that the Kashians have directed to UC Merced. In addition, they are making a substantial contribution to support an endowment for the central library, named in honor of their lifelong friends and business partners, Leo Kolligian and his late wife, Dottie.

Merced, CA - The University of California, Merced today (Oct. 24) announced that SBC Pacific Bell has donated $100,000 to fund scholarships for high-achieving undergraduate and graduate engineering students at UC Merced.

UC alumni in the Fresno area had the opportunity to meet Fresno Mayor Alan Autry and Assembly Member Sarah Reyes as well as reconnect with the University of California and network with fellow UC alumni. Both the Mayor and the Assembly Member expressed a great deal of excitement that the University of California will soon extend its reach to students in the valley when classes begin at UC Merced. The well-attended event was co-sponsored by the San Joaquin Valley UC Alumni Network and the Alumni Associations of the University of California.

Merced Family Supports UC Merced with the Establishment of 10th Endowed Chair, Library Fund-raiser
MERCED, CA - The Thondapu family of Merced has committed an endowed chair and spearheaded a major fund-raising campaign to purchase books for the University of California, Merced. To be formally announced tonight (Oct. 5) during the UC Merced World Cultures Institute Library Fundraiser, the Thondapu Family Endowed Chair is a gift from Ramakrishna Thondapu, M.D.; his wife, Sumana; and their children, Vikas and Ramesh. This will be the 10th endowed chair established at UC Merced, which has received a greater number of such endowments than any other United States university campus prior to opening.

UCSF Fresno Welcomes the School of Pharmacy to the Valley
Fresno, CA - The University of California, San Francisco, Fresno Medical Education Program (UCSF Fresno) welcomes the UCSF School of Pharmacy to Fresno. Responding to the severe shortage of pharmacists in the Central Valley, plans are currently underway to establish a program to train pharmacists in Fresno. As a first step, valley native, Mitra Assemi, PharmD, has been appointed as director of the UCSF Fresno Pharmacy Education Program.

Newest and Oldest UC Campuses Team Up on Innovative Technology Venture to Help California Students
Merced and Berkeley, CA - A new technology venture between University of California campuses in Berkeley and Merced is gearing up this year to make the content of UC Berkeley lower-division computer science courses available online for the first time. The effort is expected to help Merced graduate its first computer science class only two years after the 10th UC campus is slated to open in the San Joaquin Valley, and is one of UC Berkeley's most ambitious efforts in educational technology.

UC Participates in College Nights Throughout the San Joaquin Valley
Representatives from the UC campuses will participate in College Nights throughout the Valley during September and October. College Nights offer students and parents an opportunity to speak with college representatives as well as attend sessions on college admissions and financial aid among other topics. UC Merced, Merced County Announce One-Week Extension of Public Comment Phase on Environmental Review Documents
Merced, CA - The University of California, Merced and Merced County have extended for an additional week the public comment phase for the draft Environmental Impact Reports [EIRs] for the proposed University Long Range Development Plan and the proposed University Community Plan. The extension announced by the University and the County now means the review period will end at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001; the original deadline had been 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001.

UC Center, Fresno Fall Community ArtReach Exhibit Features the Sculpture and Photography of Richard Haas
Fresno, CA - The University of California Center, Fresno will host a reception to open its Fall Community ArtReach exhibit on Thursday, Sept. 6, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the UC Center, Fresno, 550 E. Shaw Ave., across from Fashion Fair Mall. The exhibit features the fine art photography and sculpture of Richard Haas. The ongoing exhibit also includes the work of numerous other noted San Joaquin Valley artists in a variety of mediums including watercolor, oil and mixed media paintings, and color and black and white photography.

UC Merced, Merced County Reports Detail Environmental Impacts and Mitigation Measures
Merced, CA - The development of the new UC Merced campus and adjacent University Community will over time result in various environmental impacts that range from negligible to significant, according to the draft Environmental Impact Reports [EIRs] released today (Aug. 13) by UC, Merced and Merced County. Through the reports, both the University and the County propose mitigation measures to reduce or eliminate many of the projects’ significant environmental impacts.

FRESNO - The University of California Center, Fresno opened its Summer Community ArtReach exhibit on June 7. The UC Center, Fresno is located at 550 E. Shaw Ave, Fresno, across from Fashion Fair Mall. The ArtReach exhibition is open to the public during the UC Center's normal operating hours. The summer exhibit runs through August 15.

UC Offers Summer Application Workshops in the Valley - Fresno, Modesto and Bakersfield
The UC Merced Office of Relations with Schools will offer three UC application and personal statement workshops for Valley high school seniors and community college transfer students who will be applying to a UC campus for Fall 2002. The application filing period is November 1 - 30, 2001. Participants will be the first students in California to have access to the 2002-2003 UC application. They will be guided through the application process and receive assistance with writing an effective personal statement. Workshops will be held in Fresno, Modesto and Bakersfield.

The San Joaquin Valley UC Alumni Network will present its Annual Summer Barbecue on August 11 at 6:30 p.m. at the home of UC alumni Ed and Karen Spinardi, 3231 North Willow Run Drive in Merced. Highlights include a send-off for new UC students from Merced County and an election of Alumni Network officers for the 2001-02 year.

UCCE Sponsors Fresh Market Tomato Field Day and Barbecue, LeGrand Rd.
UC Cooperative Extension will sponsor a Fresh Market Tomato Field Day and Barbecue, August 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. off of LeGrand Road between Athlone and Plainsburg Roads in Merced County. Results from a fresh market tomato variety trial will be presented along with various displays by UC researchers and agencies. The UC Merced Writing Project will offer a California Professional Development Institute for All Teachers of Grades 6-12, July 30 through August 3 at Golden Valley High School (2121 E. Childs Ave.) in Merced. The institute will focus on strategies for teaching reading and writing in all disciplines to students in underachieving schools. The cost is $100 per teacher. The second annual San Joaquin Valley School Leadership Institute will present "Focus on Accountability", a conference for school principals, July 30 through August 2 at the UC Center, Fresno. Sponsored by the UC Merced Division of Professional Studies and the UC Educational Research Center, the conference will focus on the effects of accountability on K-12 education and the role of the principal, as well as the impact of state mandated accountability systems on teacher education, curriculum and student performance. Assistance Available through Chancellor's Summer Scholarship Program

UCM - The registration deadline is fast approaching for San Joaquin Valley students wishing to enroll in the second session of University of California, Merced Summer 2001 courses. August 3 is the final day to apply for all courses in the six-week session scheduled from August 6 through September 14. Scholarships are still available for students through the UC Merced Chancellor’s Summer Scholarship Program. UCSF-Fresno's Asian Health Program Presents Findings on Pesticide Exposure, Fresno
UCSF-Fresno's Asian Health Program will present "Health Implications of Pesticide Exposure: Hmong in Fresno and Hmong in Thailand" on July 12 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the UC Center, Fresno (550 E. Shaw Ave.). Research findings will be discussed as well as solutions to help reduce farm worker exposure to pesticides. Samples of organically grown vegetables will be available. Experts from UCSF-Fresno, Yale University, University of Michigan, Georgetown University, UC Cooperative Extension and the Fresno Center for New Americans will participate. UC Cooperative Extension Open House, Tulare
Tulare County University of California Cooperative Extension will hold an open house June 29 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the new Tulare County Agricultural Complex (4437 S. Laspina Ave.) in Tulare. Participants may tour the facility and meet with advisors, Master Gardener volunteers, nutrition educators and extension staff. Refreshments will be served. UC Applauds Efforts to Increase Ag Research Funding
Fresno - In a letter to Congressman Calvin Dooley (D-Fresno), University of California President Richard C. Atkinson commended Dooley for his leadership on behalf of California agriculture and, in particular, agricultural research, education and extension. At a Fresno appearance with Rep. Dooley before a Farm Bill hearing June 18, UC Associate Vice President for Agriculture and Natural Resources Henry J. Vaux, Jr., presented the letter and praised the congressman’s efforts to boost funding for agricultural research and development.

First Hmong Doctor to Graduate from UCSF-Fresno at Historic Graduation Ceremony
FRESNO - The University of California San Francisco, Fresno Medical Education Program (UCSF-Fresno MEP) will graduate over 60 doctors on June 14 - many of whom will stay in Fresno to serve the Valley community. Some 400 people are expected to attend the event at Copper River Country Club, including Peter Yang, MD and the first Hmong doctor to graduate from UCSF-Fresno MEP. According to Yang, he will be the first Hmong physician to practice in Fresno.

UC Merced will sponsor a High School Transfer Conference, Friday, May 25 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Fresno Fairgrounds (1121 S. Chance Ave.). High school seniors who will be attending community college after graduation are invited. University of California representatives will provide information about the UC transfer process and help students prepare for a successful transfer. The conference is a collaborative effort between the community colleges and the University of California. San Joaquin Valley UC Alumni Network Spring Banquet To Be Rescheduled, Fresno
The San Joaquin Valley UC Alumni Network has received a strong response from alumni in the greater Fresno region who are interested in becoming part of the Alumni Network and participating in UC alumni activities. Unfortunately, due to scheduling conflicts for so many UC alumni and friends invited to the Spring Banquet on Saturday, May 12, the Alumni Network has decided it best to reschedule the event for another evening. The date has yet to be determined.

The San Joaquin Valley UC Alumni Network apologizes for any inconvenience this change may have caused. Information about the rescheduled event will be sent via mail and posted on the UC in the Valley web site soon.

Congressman Dooley and UC Usher In New Economic Opportunities for San Joaquin Valley Ethnic Families, Fresno
UC Cooperative Extension in Fresno County will coordinate the education programs at the new Small Farm Resource and Training Center, which will celebrate its grand opening Friday, April 20, with a presentation by U.S. Rep. Cal Dooley and ethnic food tasting, tours and displays. A network comprised of two-dozen agencies, public and private, has worked to create this new facility, the only farm incubator in the San Joaquin Valley.

The center, located at 538 W. North Ave. in Fresno, is a 20-acre farm and classroom facility developed to create new opportunities in agriculture for Hispanic, Southeast Asian, African-American and other ethnic families.

UC Merced Science Workshop, Yosemite National Park
The UC Merced, Division of Professional Studies, the Lawrence Hall of Science, and the Yosemite Institute will present the second annual hands-on science workshop for valley 4th through 6th grade teachers, Monday, April 16 through Thursday, April 19, beginning at 4:00 p.m. at Curry Village in Yosemite National Park.

The program will offer three, six-hour workshops covering four units of the Lawrence Hall of Science's Great Explorations in Math and Science (GEMS) curriculum. Units include: Terrarium Habitats, Aquatic Habitats, Stories in Stone, and Investigating Artifacts. Strategies for teaching hands-on science will also be covered.

Beef Quality Assurance I Program, Modesto
The University of California Cooperative Extension and the California Cattlemen's Association will present Cow-Calif Quality Assurance I, a training and certification program for cattle producers in Central California on Tuesday, April 3 from 11:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Mapes Ranch (10555 Maze Blvd, Hwy 132 West) in Modesto.

The UCSF-Fresno Medical Education Program formally announced its most successful recruitment season to date on March 29 at University Medical Center in Fresno. UCSF-Fresno Associate Dean Deborah Stewart, M.D., along with eight medical education program directors, revealed the names of 50 outstanding medical school graduates who will be coming to the Central Valley in June to begin their residency programs.
