UC
MERCED SPONSORS SECOND ANNUAL EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
FOR VALLEY CHICANO/LATINO STUDENTS
Fresno,
CA - The Second Annual San Joaquin Valley Chicano/Latino Educational
Leadership Conference will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on
Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001 at the UC Center, Fresno (550 E. Shaw Ave.).
The event is designed to inspire students to realize their educational
and professional potential; encourage students to pursue post-secondary
educational opportunities; instill the importance of cultural and
family values; and motivate students to better the San Joaquin Valley
through public service.
About
100 Chicano/Latino high school students are expected to attend.
Participants were selected based on their potential to positively
impact the San Joaquin Valley and responses to essay questions.
"This
event is about encouraging young people to reach their full potential,"
said spokesperson, Jorge Aguilar. "We want these students to
know that they can obtain a college education and make positive
contributions to the valley. All of our conference speakers are
living, breathing proof."
The San Joaquin Valley Chicano/Latino Educational Leadership Conference
Committee was formed in the summer of 1999 to develop a student-centered
educational leadership conference that provides high-quality learning
opportunities and the development of leadership skills that will
strengthen and benefit a diverse community.
The
event is sponsored by UC Merced's Early Academic Outreach Program/UC
Scholars; California State University, Fresno; Fresno Pacific University;
Heald College; and the Chicano Latino Youth Leadership Project.
UC
Merced - the tenth UC campus and the nation's first research university
to be built in the 21st century - is scheduled to open in 2004.
The UC Scholars Early Academic Outreach Program serves historically
disadvantaged K-12 students in Fresno, Kings, Madera, Merced, and
Tulare Counties. The program's objective is to increase student
competitive UC eligibility and enrollments rates in the Central
San Joaquin Valley.
