UC CENTER, FRESNO FALL COMMUNITY ARTREACH EXHIBITION FEATURES THE SCULPTURE AND PHOTOGRAPHY OF RICHARD HAAS

Opening reception will be held Thursday, September 6

FRESNO - The University of California Center, Fresno will host a reception to open its Fall Community ArtReach exhibit on Thursday, Sept. 6, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the UC Center, Fresno, 550 E. Shaw Ave., across from Fashion Fair Mall.

Community ArtReach, an ongoing exhibition of fine art by distinguished San Joaquin Valley artists, is part of the wide variety of services and resources offered by the University of California to Valley residents through the UC Center, Fresno.

The Fall ArtReach exhibit features the sculpture and fine art photography of Richard Haas. Dr. Haas' work reflects the depth of his interest in and knowledge of our world, its people, cultures, plant and animal life. He received his undergraduate degree and postgraduate degrees in zoology from UCLA. He is a professor emeritus of biology, Fresno State University. His scientific and teaching work has led him to travel throughout the world to such places as Bolivia, China, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia, and Egypt. He has led safaris in Kenya, the upper Amazon and the Galapagos. Haas' photography conveys an array of sights, colors and textures from the many diverse and interesting cultures in our world. Many of his realistic terra cotta sculptures are of wildlife in their natural habitats. Haas is currently organizing a photography and wildlife safari to Botswana and Zimbabwe in partnership with noted Fresno photographer, Steve Dzerigian.

Other artists whose work is on exhibit as part of the UC Center's Community ArtReach include: Juana Almaguer, Cynthia Benno, Shannon Bickford, Robert Cochran, Jim Curnyn, Fara Dast, Sally Delap-John, Michael Garcia, Kathy Gillis, Michelle Ricci Koch, Rich Milhorn, Scott Shaver and Joyce Tuck. The work includes oil, watercolor and mixed media paintings, color and black-and-white photography and sculpture.

At the September 6 reception, artists will be available to answer questions about their work, and light refreshments will be served.

This event and future quarterly ArtReach receptions will be held in conjunction with the Fresno Arts Council's ArtHop nights. The exhibit is also open to the public during normal UC Center, Fresno operating hours.

Community ArtReach is a collaborative effort by UC Center, Fresno staff members and Buffy Morris of Morris & Co. Fine Art in Fresno. The program's aim is to support and encourage the creativity of Valley artists and expose the community to fine works of art.
