Doctors Who Use Rap Music to Deliver Asthma Message to be Featured
at UCSF-Fresno Family Practice Lecture Series at UMC
Doctors John Clarke and Matthew Clarke are scheduled to present
a special "rapping" musical lecture at 12 noon on Tuesday, August
29, in the South Auditorium of University Medical Center, located
at 445 South Cedar Avenue, Fresno.
These
New York family practice physicians, who are brothers, have produced
a series of rap CD's addressing health topics such as asthma, HIV,
smoking cessation, anti-violence, and bullying. Incorporating research
and their own studies, the Clarkes demonstrate use of music in adolescent
social development and its value in medical education. Their ability
to communicate with the adolescent community has been documented
with numerous appearances on television and talk radio programs
as well as lectures throughout the United States. After conducting
studies with adolescents and their compliance about taking medication
for asthma, the Clarkes wrote and produced a "cool" CD called Asthma
Stuff. Their work highlights the impact of music on educating adolescent
patients. When the audience listens to the music, it will be apparent
why this CD has documented success stories with teen asthma patients.
This
topic holds particular significance for the Valley, with asthma
the leading cause for pediatric hospital admissions in California.
In addition, Fresno County has the third highest mortality rate
for asthma in the entire country.
Matthew
Clarke received his medical degree from Union University in Albany,
NY, and completed his residency in Jamaica, NY. In 1995, Clarke
received a scholarship from the American Association of Family Practitioners'
Committee on Minority Health Affairs. He is a family physician in
Queens and co-president of MDMD Inc. John Clarke received his medical
degree from Mount Sinai in New York City, and is currently serving
as the family practice chief resident at St. Vincent's Catholic
Medical Center in Queens, NY.
The
lecture on August 29 is sponsored by the UCSF-Fresno Family Practice
Residency Program; the CMC-Asthma Education and Management Program;
and a grant from Glaxo-Wellcome.
